    Toward human-centered algorithm design.Eric P. S. Baumer - 2017 - Big Data and Society 4 (2).
As algorithms pervade numerous facets of daily life, they are incorporated into systems for increasingly diverse purposes. These systems’ results are often interpreted differently by the designers who created them than by the lay persons who interact with them. This paper offers a proposal for human-centered algorithm design, which incorporates human and social interpretations into the design process for algorithmically based systems. It articulates three specific strategies for doing so: theoretical, participatory, and speculative. Drawing on the author’s work designing and (...)

The determined property of baire in reverse math.Eric P. Astor, Damir Dzhafarov, Antonio Montalbán, Reed Solomon & Linda Brown Westrick - 2020 - Journal of Symbolic Logic 85 (1):166-198.
We define the notion of a completely determined Borel code in reverse mathematics, and consider the principle $CD - PB$, which states that every completely determined Borel set has the property of Baire. We show that this principle is strictly weaker than $AT{R_0}$. Any ω-model of $CD - PB$ must be closed under hyperarithmetic reduction, but $CD - PB$ is not a theory of hyperarithmetic analysis. We show that whenever $M \subseteq {2^\omega }$ is the second-order part of an ω-model (...)

Observationality: Quine and the Epistemological Nihilists.P. William Bechtel & Eric Stiffler - 1978 - PSA: Proceedings of the Biennial Meeting of the Philosophy of Science Association 1978:93 - 108.
Quine has proposed an alternative criterion for identifying observation sentences which has not yet received serious evaluation. We investigate this new criterion, showing how it differs from more traditional criteria and measuring it against the major objections to traditional criteria. Our judgment is that it meets Suppe's and Achinstein's objections and one version of the theory-ladenness objection offered by Hanson, Feyerabend, and Kuhn. We suggest how it might also provide an answer to the more serious version of the theory-ladenness objection. (...)

How do ethics show up in the everyday behaviors and conversations of researchers in a scientific laboratory? How does the microcosmic culture of the laboratory shape researchers’ understandings of scientific ethics? We, an interdisciplinary team representing anthropology, computer science, and rhetorical studies, investigated these questions in two university STEM labs. Similar to previous work mapping out the epistemic cultures, we sought to understand the ethical cultures of these research groups. We observed their lab meetings for several months and conducted interviews (...)

On the Existential Road From Regret to Heroism: Searching for Meaning in Life.Eric R. Igou, Wijnand A. P. van Tilburg, Elaine L. Kinsella & Laura K. Buckley - 2018 - Frontiers in Psychology 9.
We investigated whether regret predicted the motivation to act heroically. In a series of studies, we examined the relationship between regret, search for meaning in life, and heroism motivation. First, Study 1 (a and b) established the link between regret and search for meaning in life, considering regret as a whole, action regret, and inaction regret. Specifically, regret correlated positively with search for meaning in life. In additional two studies, we examined whether regret predicted the heroism motivation and whether this (...)

  20. The Oxford Handbook of Philosophy of Cognitive Science.Eric Margolis, Richard Samuels & Stephen P. Stich (eds.) - 2012 - Oxford University Press.
The philosophy of cognitive science is concerned with fundamental philosophical and theoretical questions connected to the sciences of the mind. How does the brain give rise to conscious experience? Does speaking a language change how we think? Is a genuinely intelligent computer possible? What features of the mind are innate? Advances in cognitive science have given philosophers important tools for addressing these sorts of questions; and cognitive scientists have, in turn, found themselves drawing upon insights from philosophy--insights that have often (...)

Some initial steps toward improving the measurement of ethical evaluations of marketing activities.R. Eric Reidenbach & Donald P. Robin - 1988 - Journal of Business Ethics 7 (11):871 - 879.
This study reports on the development of scale items derived from the pluralistic moral philosophy literature. In addition, the manner in which individuals combine aspects of the different philosophies in making ethical evaluations was explored.

  23. A conceptual model of corporate moral development.R. Eric Reidenbach & Donald P. Robin - 1991 - Journal of Business Ethics 10 (4):273 - 284.
The conceptual model presented in this article argues that corporations exhibit specific behaviors that signal their true level of moral development. Accordingly, the authors identify five levels of moral development and discuss the dynamics that move corporations from one level to another. Examples of corporate behavior which are indicative of specific stages of moral development are offered.

Insights from studying prejudice in the context of American atheists.Eric P. Charles, Nicholas J. Rowland, Brooke Long & Fritz Yarrison - 2012 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 35 (6):429-430.
Our research on non-religion supports the proposed shift toward more interactive models of prejudice. Being nonreligious is easily hideable and, increasingly, of low salience, leading to experiences not easily understood via traditional or contemporary frameworks for studying prejudice and prejudice reduction. This context affords new opportunity to observe reverse forms of interactive prejudice, which can interfere with prejudice reduction.

The Great Philoosphical Objections to AI: The History and Legacy of the AI Wars.Eric Dietrich, Chris Fields, John P. Sullins, Van Heuveln Bram & Robin Zebrowski - 2021 - London: Bloomsbury Academic.
This book surveys and examines the most famous philosophical arguments against building a machine with human-level intelligence. From claims and counter-claims about the ability to implement consciousness, rationality, and meaning, to arguments about cognitive architecture, the book presents a vivid history of the clash between the philosophy and AI. Tellingly, the AI Wars are mostly quiet now. Explaining this crucial fact opens new paths to understanding the current resurgence AI (especially, deep learning AI and robotics), what happens when philosophy meets (...)

In a recent study on the spawn of the common frog surveyed over several breeding sites, a significant linear relationship. An open question exists, as to why such a strong linear relationship is to be found. Using elementary physics, I suggest some factors which may underly the observed linearity and how it may reveal characteristics other than size of a breeding population. A follow-up experiment is outlined to test for these in the field and some ecological implications are discussed.

This book aims to show why a proper ontology of persons has paramount importance for our understanding of the nature of consciousness and its relation to the phenomenon of unconsciousness and artificial intelligence. Contemporary discussions on consciousness often focus on seeking solutions for a wide range of issues that revolve around questions related to what sort of role the brain plays in the existence of consciousness. These questions raise multi-layered and diverse metaphysical (especially, ontological), personal, medical, moral, and legal issues. (...)
